Fitz is the longest serving companion if you go just by sheer story number. What we tend to see with long serving companions is that slow shift towards becoming more like the Doctor ideologically...which is definitely where the possibility of Fitz being uncomfortable on Earth comes in. He might feel trapped without the adventure, but I also think he could be comfortable on any planet if he found someplace that he could call home.

Here's a bit from The Deadstone Memorial (definitely one of my favorite EDAs):

‘I’ve been thinking,’ began Fitz after a short while, ‘about what we talked about in the garden.’ The Doctor said nothing, so he carried on: ‘Maybe you’re right. I don’t feel like I belong on Earth any more. The TARDIS is my home now. But I’m cool with that.’
The Doctor said, ‘Good.’

If Fitz decided to leave, he might feel at a loose end initially, but eventually I think he would find a place of his own. And failing that, he would definitely remain changed - he couldn't be the man that the Doctor first found in 1963 again.
